Layer: the second project & The HANDS

HANDS is a group of Australian based-Korean jewellery and object makers. The list of designers and makers include Daehoon Kang, Joungmee Do, Jin-ah Jo, Sunggee Min, Indie Baik & myself.
Come early September, The Hands group will be showcasing a range of works wich will be on display and sold @ The Journal Cafe, located central Melbourne.

From the very beginning, I had wanted this project to coincide with my Uni project. The ideas, influences and intentions were based on Layer: the second project.

I'm still undecided in what to actually design/create for the Layer project, hopefully this could lead to something...

Layer: the second project

This week, I've been looking into forming and constructing with wire. (Copper preferred)
Here are some images to show my transition from previous thoughts and ideas, presented in the previous blog post.

Layer: the second project

The next few weeks, I'll be dedicating my blog posts towards my university project, titled the 'layer'.
The word 'layer' could be provided with endless meanings, however I have narrowed it down to looking at 'layer' associating with; levels, stacks, coverage, texture etc...
This is only the starting point and I'm sure it will change along the way...
Meanwhile, I have gathered some images of products (of others), favouring its purpose, material and value.

'the fold'

To design and produce an object based on the idea of the 'fold'...

   How it all began...

model making & playing with possible ideas...

Model making

More cardboard models...

refining model design

larger model

refining techniques and processes

constructing custom mould for shaping

utilising mould, using the press

joining/constructing issues...

spray painting to test out colours

prototype

I felt the piece lacked something, which meant more playing around with design, material, construction etc...

industrial double sided tape for joining?

testing out perforated galvanised steel as a possible material choice

The perforation reduces weight and has an interesting visual affect

Also came up with a solution of joining the two panels using tube rivets

The rough edges were a problem

The blank strip helped solve the 'rough edge' problem as well as providing a negative space for branding

Four points of enfoldment is intended as a showcase as well as a
market. It is a short but vital moment for the designers to shine and
show off their potential for innovation. Four points represents the
culmination of work by the designers in the Masters of Design program
at UTS; which pairs the creative process with practical small scale
manufacture. The range of work that will be presented explores the
concept of ‘fold’; with designers from very different backgrounds, it
presents the exhibition with four objects designed with their own
unique philosophy.
